Necropoli
It dates back to the Christian era and is one of the most important archaeological attractions of Vieste: it is the Ancient Necropolis La Salata.
For many years, the Ancient Necropolis of Vieste has been left in a state of total neglect and degradation. Then, WWF volunteers of Vieste have been taking care of this area, which is an important archaeological, but also historical and cultural heritage of the town.
Nowadays, La Salata is part of the areas protected by WWF: this is due to the presence of animal and plant species not found in other naturalistic contexts.
Barn owls, jays and amphibians have found here their ideal habitat, turning the archaeological area into a beautiful protected oasis.
It is almost unbelievable to think of the presence of all these life species in a necropolis, which is built to fulfill the function of burial ground and is, therefore, full of tombs and parietal niches or niches inserted within ancient caves.
By visiting the Necropolis La Salata in Vieste, you will be able to admire some of the greatest examples of early Christian art from all over the Mediterranean area.
